OCBCA REPORT 2011
The OCBCA now have 179 members, which has increased significantly over the past 12 months, due to the fact that all new learners attending UKCC coaching courses have an incentive to be a member, as the price of the course is reduced by £50, to obtain not only the insurance but the tremendous benefits provided.
Lesley Pykett, our secretary has been busy compiling the database of coaches so we can provide a reminder when the minimum quality standard of continuing as a coach, such as an ECB CRB, 1st Aid and Safeguarding Children courses, are due for renewal, so they will never need to be without the relevant cover.
The Association has run Continuous Professional Development (CPD) days including a wicket keeping master class with Jack Russell and an audience with Jack Brooks.
We ran, in conjunction with the county sports partnership, a Howzat workshop for cricket coaches run by the ECB’s Regional Training Manager, Gary Worgan, at their conference in July, although there were only 12 attendees the workshop was incredibly well received.
We have had a recent meeting to discuss amongst other things what do we do for our membership?
Do we need more CPD days and if so what should be included, team building, mental toughness in cricket, psychology in the game, awareness of disability cricket etc.
We also discussed the possibility of running our very own County Cricket Conference, or should we, as we did this year just add our events to the County Sports Partnership conference, if so what should we include, always worthwhile providing a 1st Aid and SPC course, another refresher on Howzat CPD sessions as mentioned above.
Once you have read this report, if you have any ideas on the above please do contact me on dwoods@oxoncb.com.
One thing we never have enough information on, is how many coaches are actually actively coaching in Oxfordshire and this is something we are looking to find out during 2012.
The Coaching Association now has a separate entry on the OCB website, which means it can concentrate on the above items and not worry about adding things regarding coach education.
With regard to Coach Education I can confirm that we ran two UKCC Level 1 courses and one UKCC level 2 courses during 2011 where we had 30 attendees on the level 1 and 17 on level 2. The pass rate is very high, but some of the learners still have to undertake a 1st Aid and SPC course or be signed off for their ECB CRB check.
This is one of the largest admin tasks of the Coach Ed dept and although we now include the 1st Aid and SPC course as a part of the whole course in general i.e. it is included on day one of the course, we are still in their hands to provide all the documentation for their CRB and this can unfortunately be a major stumbling block for some people, they are unable to be certificated until all these pre-requisites are completed.
We are currently looking for a venue to run a UKCC Level 2 course early in 2012 but we are struggling to find a suitable or available venue.
We have just done a major admin task in arranging assessment dates for learners that were either injured or not available for their original assessment and this has led to having several more UKCC Level 2 coaches in the system. This is costing a lot of money, therefore no learner, that is now over 2 years from their course, can be assessed and their papers have been filed accordingly. If they wish to pass, they will have to attend another course and pay the appropriate fee. A system will be introduced to make sure this does not happen in the future.
District development groups will be asked if they would like to host any courses, for example SODDG have organised a Cricket Young Leaders course and along with Chadlington CC, a 1st Aid and SPC course.
